Lowering the nose long enough to look for other traffic is one way to make sure no one's in front of you. It's also pretty easy to do because
if you have your airplane trimmed, you can simply push the nose
over a little, look for traffic, and then let the nose rise back up to the climb attitude.
Arial
Making shallow s-turns during the climb makes it easier to see that part of the sky that was blocked
by the nose. It also gives you a better view out the side windows for traffic.

\pard\plain\f4\fs18\b You'll have to start leveling off a little before you get to your desired altitude. Ten percent of your climb rate is a good guideline to use for this.
\par
\par If you're climbing at 500 feet per minute, you'll want to begin leveling off about 50 feet before you reach the altitude you want. As you lower the nose, keep the power in until you accelerate to your cruise speed. You'll also need less right rudder pressure as the left-turning tendency decreases.\plain\f3\fs17\b

\pard\plain\f4\fs18\b When you reach your cruising altitude and speed, you'll want to trim the airplane to relieve the control pressures. Depending on the situation, you may need to pull back some power at this point.
\par
\par It's also important to remember to set the mixture whenever your altitude changes significantly. Say you take off from an airport with an elevation of 1,000 feet and climb to 8,000 feet. Your engine needs less fuel, so you need to lean the mixture.
\par
\par One of the more common ways is to lean the mixture until the engine begins to run rough,\plain\f4\fs18 \plain\f4\fs18\b then enrich it slightly until it runs smooth again. By leaning the mixture at higher altitudes, you'll use less fuel and get better overall performance from the engine.\plain\f3\fs17\b
